The Heart of the Canteen: A Tradition of Service, Food, and Community
The tradition of the canteen began during World War II, when volunteers at the North Platte Canteen in Nebraska welcomed traveling service members with home-cooked meals, conversation, and kindness. What started as a simple act of support became a lasting symbol of community, gratitude, and connection.
Today, Veteran Pathways of New England (formerly Clear Path for Veterans New England) proudly continues that tradition through our weekly Canteen Lunches, bringing Veterans, military families, and community members together to share meals, build relationships, and strengthen community connections.
